I vote Aye and will add the ratification of the email vote to the agenda for August.
Unrelated, but I don’t see the current bylaws linked in the wiki anywhere – if someone can point me in their direction I will make sure they are clearly linked from the governance main page 😊

We have a motion by Galen Charlton and a second by Jeanette Lundgren. I'd like to call for an email vote to approve the following:
"That the Evergreen Project authorize Kathy Lussier and Ruth Frasur, as well as any other volunteers that may arise, to apply to the Open Infrastructure Fund in 2023 (https://investinopen.org/blog/open-infrastructure-fund-pilot-cfp/) on behalf of The Evergreen Project."
You can vote by replying "aye", "nay", or "abstain" to this email.
I will abstain as I'm named in the motion.

Hi,
Upon skimming the prospectus, it looks like TEP can plausibly apply. Since Ruth as a board member and president has volunteered to assist, and since I see some advantage to applying as an organization, I would like to make an email motion: To wit:
That the Evergreen Project authorize Kathy Lussier and Ruth Frasur, as well as any other volunteers that may arise, to apply to the Open Infrastructure Fund in 2023 (https://investinopen.org/blog/open-infrastructure-fund-pilot-cfp/) on behalf of The Evergreen Project.
(As a discussion point: since TEP has no staff, I think it is safest to use a board motion to authorize that somebody speak for TEP in this matter is the safest way to go, since if the grant is awarded, it will come with obligations binding TEP. However, in the medium/long run, I could see the board establishing a framework for a board committee to write grants more autonomously without each and every grant having to be the topic of a board motion).
Regards,
Galen

Hi all,
Circling back to the discussion at this week's board meeting regarding funds to support an in-person retreat for strategic planning, do you think it might be worth submitting a proposal to see if we could get funding through the Open Infrastructure Fund? If our application were successful, we could support travel costs for all participants and possibly revisit the question of a consultant. I know there was a thought it would be difficult to find a consultant that would understand our niche needs, but there are consultants out there that work with open source communities, and I'm confident the Board could explain the specific uniqueness that comes from a library-supported project.
Strengthening Community Governance is one of their focus areas:
* Organizing community workshops to discuss governance needs and (re)design governance structures.
* Convene a dedicated committee/working group of key stakeholders to lead work on diversifying governance.
* Work on improving governance processes, e.g. reviewing and evolving bylaws and other policies.
The deadline is just around the corner, but I would be happy to work with somebody on the Strategic Planning Committee/Board to pull something together if you think it's worth a shot.
Kathy

Dear Kathy,
In May, the IOI team launched calls for proposals for the Open Infrastructure Fund.<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=989&qid=7899> The Fund aims to strengthen sustainability and resilience and increase the adoption of open infrastructure worldwide. Our community co-designed the Fund through a series of participatory activities, which increased the accessibility of funding and helped pilot a more transparent way of funding open infrastructure. The application deadline is July 31, 2023, so if interested, make sure to submit your proposal before then.
In June, we also held our second in-person workshop in Africa, adjacent to Open Repositories 2023. The workshop was a multi-sectoral forum to understand how best to synergise the public and private sectors to commit additional resources for African research infrastructure. We have summarised the key points in a blog post<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=990&qid=7899> that we hope you will find insightful.
Internally, the IOI team has also been growing, with two new members joining in May and additional team members joining in the next few weeks. We have also been doing some strategic realignment to ensure that we are responsive to the community we serve and put in place the required processes and systems to be more efficient.
For more on these stories and more, please dive into the newsletter. We are always interested in comments or suggestions from our community - please drop us a line if you’d like to share any insights with us.

Call for proposals for IOI Open Infrastructure fund closes on July 31
IOI's core objective is to improve funding and resourcing for open technologies and systems for research and scholarship. In May, we launched the call for proposals for the Open Infrastructure Fund, an initiative to strengthen sustainability and resilience and increase the adoption of open infrastructure globally. Funding of 5,000-25,000 USD is available to support projects with capacity building, governance, and critical shared infrastructure as their focal areas. 60% of the grant funding has been reserved for Low and Middle-Income Economies as part of our resolve to bridge resourcing inequities. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2023. Open access ‘at any cost’ cannot support scholarly publishing communities
Our Executive Director, Kaitlin Thaney, has penned an op-ed in the LSE Impact Blog<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=994&qid=7899> that calls upon entities profiting from open research to actively reinvest in the communities and infrastructures that contribute to the sustenance of their businesses. The article highlights the need for more resolute and clear terms for what “reasonable cost” means to achieve the aims of open access and research.

Recap of IOI workshop on sustainable research infrastructure in Africa
In June, we facilitated an in-person workshop in Somerset West, South Africa that focused on exploring how public-private partnerships (PPPs) can contribute to sustainable research infrastructures on the continent. This discussion was precipitated by our workshop in Accra, Ghana in March<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=995&qid=7899> where PPPs were suggested as a potential remedy to enhancing the sustainability of open research infrastructures. We invited a range of actors from the private sector, governments, and academia to explore how we can synergize between the private and public sectors to come up with sustainable models for investing in research infrastructure. We summarized the key learnings from the workshop on the IOI website.

Final report on defining open infrastructure launched
We recently released the final report on defining open scholy infrastructure, following a public review period on our draft report from our preliminary investigation<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=996&qid=7899> last year. The report highlights key findings on the critical dimensions and characteristics of #openinfrastructure<https://investinopen.civicrm.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=997&qid=7899> derived from an extensive literature review process. This report represents a significant step towards enhancing our collective understanding of the infrastructure that supports scientific research and scholarly communication.
