By my count, that's 5-1 in support of the mailing list policy I proposed. However, Dan made some good points that I'd like to address. So what I've done is mock up a modified Contribute page and Mailing List page showing how I think they might work better together and incorporate some of the issues I was going for while addressing some of Dan's concerns.

Specifically, I'd like to be able to include a policy based on the community values we came up with at the last conference. So, I put that values statement at the top of the Contribute page.

Also, on the Contribute page, I included a statement about transparency and privacy after introducing the "mailing lists" and "IRC" channels since these are both public and logged and our policy is not to change the archives except under very limited circumstances.

The other changes I made to the Contribute page was to add a reference to the wiki. It wasn't there before.

Also, for the other communication methods (event calendar, official blog, community blogs) and the wiki, I'd like to provide a link to someone who can help someone contribute to each. Who to contact if they have something to add to the blog? Who to contact if they want a wiki account? Who to contact if they'd like to add something to the calendar? Who to contact if they have a blog to add to the community blog aggregator? In most cases, there is no contact person or way to actually contribute directly. In some cases, it is very difficult to do so (e.g. the event calendar) so it would be nice to just have one person who was willing to add a single item to the event calendar sometimes.

My overall goal is to try to clarify who is managing each section and keep that transparent to everyone. So if we can add the points of contact, I think we'd go a long way in that regard.

A mock up (with some questions inserted) of the two new proposed pages are attached.

With your +1 on the general presentation of these two pages I will take them to the Web Team and work on finalizing them and getting them posted.

Thanks for those links Galen. I'll toss out a draft mailing list
policy to get us going....

Mailing List Policy

Mailing lists are crucial to the operation of the Evergreen Community.
The General Mailing List serves as the primary communication for all
members of the community and provides a venue for users to help each
other use the software. In addition, Evergreen users and developers
use mailing lists to coordinate development and the Oversight Board
uses a mailing list to manage issues of governance. Mailing lists also
serve as a primary channel for working groups to conduct Evergreen
business (e.g. Documentation Interest Group, Web Team, Catalogers,
etc).

The Evergreen community values openness, transparency, and
collaboration and seeks to provide an environment that respects and
encourages all contributions. As such, none of the Evergreen mailing
lists are private. Anyone can subscribe to any of the lists available
at http://evergreen-ils.org/listserv.php.

Mailing list participants are expected to respect the stated purpose
of each list and conduct themselves in a mutually respectful manner at
all times.

The lists are also archived archived and publicly searchable. Our
policy is that the archives are not modified except under rare
situations where confidential information has been inadvertently
shared on a list. Please send a request promptly to
feedback at evergreen-ils.org<mailto:feedback at evergreen-ils.org> if you believe you are the exception.
However, be advised that deleting information in the archives will not
make it go away because mailing lists have been mirrored, have feeds
and are in the Google cache and other search engine indexes.
