Hi Sarah,
I added a comment to your bug report. There is a way to do this already.
>From the title record, if you click the "Actions for this Record" menu
and select "Manage Parts," you'll see a list of parts associated with
the record. If you double-click on one, you should be able to rename the
part. This should be available in 2.2.
The one instance where I've had trouble with this is when I tried
renaming it as a part that was already being used on the record. I was
essentially trying to merge the two parts together, but it doesn't work.
