I agree with Elaine Hardy that creating the bib templates with the ability to add specific data to any bib record whether it is new or already in the database would be quite helpful.

Thanks,

While PINES does not create original bibliographic records in our local database, I see the value in having the ability to customize, create, and delete bib templates at all levels, including individual. Allowing an individual to create a bib template for local use would increase efficiency and accuracy when cataloging titles where the same information is included in each bib record. For example, if a 590 note indicating a specific gift is desired in a large number of records. These local templates should be deletable so that if the need is temporary, the can be removed.

With the ability to create customized local bib templates should also come the ability to lock specific templates used on the system or consortial level to prevent changes or deletions. I think this should be extended to locally created templates as well, so that if a customized template is used by several catalogers, it can be protected.

I also agree that templates for authority record creation should be handled in the same way.

This is similar to what OCLC calls constant data. Rather than templates, I would prefer something like constant data where catalogers can apply specific data to any record, whether copy cataloging or original. That way, using the above 590 example, any time a local note is added to a bib record, it can be applied without the use of a template --- just that field is applied to any bib record. It would also assist in upgrading AACR2 records to RDA records.

Hi Sharon and all,

To add our two cents to the discussion.

We'd also like library staff to have the ability to create/edit/delete the bibliographic templates in the
staff client.

We agree it would be great to be able to assign the templates to particular locations, workstations, or users;
possibly in a similar way to how toolbars currently can be created and assigned. We would want to still have
global templates shared with the entire consortium but allow library staff to create library specific templates
that they could share with their library or save for themselves.

We don't currently use authorities but think it would make sense to be able to create authority templates as well.
For consistencies sake it may make sense for authority records to be set up the same way as the bibliographic templates regarding permissions and sharing even if all the functionality is not currently required.
