Hi Evergreen catalogers,

Last month, this list had a lively conversation about possible ways to
use new MARC fields to display really helpful icons in the OPAC. The
subject of the thread, started by Rogan Hamby, is "RDA search
formats".

Adam Schiff just sent a really helpful email to AUTOCAT about
controlled vocabularies for the 347$b. Perhaps this will be helpful
in our further discussions.

In addition to the other comments on the example

347 _ _ video file $b Vimeo $2 rda

I wanted to point out two things:

1) There are now separate MARC codes for each of the controlled
vocabularies from RDA, such as file type (347 $a). The full list is
at https://www.loc.gov/standards/sourcelist/genre-form.html but I've
copied them here:

rdabf
    RDA bibliographic format External Link
rdabs
    RDA broadcast standard External Link
rdaco
    RDA content type
rdacc
    RDA colour content
rdacpc
    RDA configuration of playback channels
rdact
    RDA carrier type
rdafnm
    RDA format of notated music
rdafs
    RDA font size
rdaft
    RDA file type
rdagen
    RDA generation
rdagrp
RDA groove pitch of an analog cylinder
rdagw
RDA groove width of an analog disc
rdalay
    RDA layout
rdamat
    RDA material
rdamt
    RDA media type
rdapf
    RDA presentation format
rdapm
    RDA production method
rdapo
    RDA polarity
rdare
    RDA regional encoding
rdarm
    RDA recording medium
rdarr
    RDA reduction ratio designation
rdaspc
    RDA special playback characteristic
rdatc
    RDA track configuration
rdatr
    RDA type of recording
rdavf
    RDA video format

The code "rda" is still valid to use in 33X-34X fields, but OCLC
policy is to prefer the more specific codes. See the section entitled
"Use of MARC Codes in 33X and 34X fields" at
https://www.oclc.org/support/services/worldcat/documentation/tb/267.en.html.

So for the file type, the preference is now to record:

347 __ video file $2 rdaft

2) Encoding format (RDA 3.19.3) is not an RDA controlled vocabulary
anymore, so there is no valid code for it. Therefore, the encoding
format should be recorded in a separate 347 $b with no $2.

Applying all of the separate codes for different RDA controlled
vocabularies for a DVD video, you'd get something like this:

344 ## digital $2 rdatr
344 ## $b optical $2 rdarm
344 ## $g surround $g stereo $2 rdacpc
344 ## $h Dolby Digital 5.1 $h Dolby Digital 2.0
346 ## $b NTSC $2 rdabs
347 ## video file $2 rdaft
347 ## $b DVD video
347 ## $e region 1 $2 rdare

Note that since the terms recorded for special playback
characteristics (344 $h) don't come from the controlled list at RDA
3.16.9.3, there's no $2 in that 344 field either.
