Hi Will,

At the user level, any interfaces that sorts a list of call numbers --
the virtual shelf browse, lists of call numbers on the result page
when "Show more details" is selected, various holdings lists such as
on the record detail page, the hold pull list, and others -- need to
be able to sort call numbers in a consistent way, so the
classification scheme of each call number tells Evergreen how to do
that.

>From a general perspective, of course, call numbers aren't just
numeric values, but string of text with letters and numbers mixed
together. The rules on how to sort the number characters inside a
call number differ from scheme to scheme, as well as if, when, and how
to include the non-numeric information in the sorting process.
Assigning a classification scheme is how the cataloger tells Evergreen
what the sorting rules are for that specific call number.

Does that help?

I looked through the Evergreen documentation, and all I could find was that it "has an effect on call number sorting," but I am unclear on what that actually means. Is it a reference to searching by call number via shelf browse? Or something else entirely?
