<div dir="ltr"><div><div><div>Jane and All,<br><br></div>In LC's own catalog, when "<a href="https://catalog.loc.gov/vwebv/searchBrowse">Browse</a> Call Numbers (LC Class No.)" is searched, a space is always provided in the results list where the $b is located. Clearly this is what LC considers best practices and we should follow their lead. This same convention should be included whenever an LC library creates a copy record. A space should default in the Call Number text box depending on wherever <span style="color:rgb(255,0,0)">$b</span> is located. This will vary when there are double cutters. Example:</div><div><br></div>BS511.2<span style="background-color:rgb(255,0,0)"> </span>.B38 2014<br></div>BX8495.W5<span style="background-color:rgb(255,0,0)"> </span>A3 1814<br><div><div><div><br></div><div>In fields 082 and 092 LC catalogers do not provide a $b cutter number in their bibliographic description. Instead they leave that to the individual libraries to supply. But it is common practice for Dewey libraries to include a cutter number, and for consistencies sake, I would think that a space should be displayed where a $b is present in copy records and results screens. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Don <br></div><div><br></div></div></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Wed, Sep 6, 2017 at 8:01 PM, Jane Sandberg <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:sandbej@linnbenton.edu" target="_blank">sandbej@linnbenton.edu</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex">Hi catalogers,<br>

I wanted to get your input on the following discussion:<br>

<br>
Specifically, would you prefer that, when you are creating a new<br>
volume and Evergreen suggests a call number, it:<br>
a) adds a space between the data it gets from subfields $a and $b from<br>
the 050/080/082 field?<br>
b) does not add such a space (current behavior).<br>
<br>
As a library that uses LC Classification, we'd prefer adding a space<br>
there, since LC call numbers get long and unreadable without it (and<br>
because Evergreen's normalizer expects a space). I haven't seen too<br>
many 080 or 082 fields that even use a $b, but I've only taken a<br>
cursory glance.<br>
<br>
Let me know what you think!<br>
<br>
Thanks,<br>
