On this:
Vice Chairperson The Vice Chairperson shall, in the event of the absence or
inability of the
Chairperson to exercise his/her office, become acting Chairperson of the
organization with all the rights, privileges and powers as if he/she was the
duly elected Chairperson. The Vice Chairperson shall also serve as the
chairperson on committees on special subjects as designated by the board or
Chairperson
Should we consider making the Vice Chairperson the Chair Elect? The thought
here is that you spend one year grooming your Vice Chair so that the
following year they can assume the responsibility of Chair with some
knowledge of what went before him/her. The terms of Chair and Vice-Chair
could be changed to just one year each to allow new blood in and to
eliminate the burden of a multi-year obligation of serving as Chair. That
way, too, the role of Vice-Chair isn't so, um, boring, and you'd get people
who would take it more seriously. You run the risk of losing your Chairs,
too - people bail - new job, other commitments, they didn't quite understand
the level of responsibility that comes with the territory, etc. You want a
Vice Chair who can step in if necessary.
