Actually, we started using Apache 2.2 recently to pick up some additional
caching/proxying options that are not required by the ILS.  Both 2.0
and 2.2should work fine.


Regarding the empty httpd.conf, it may be that this is stored in a

This is essentially the culprit here.  More below...


I prefer to build apache 2.0 from source vs. trying to adopt a

I believe this is a side-effect of the apxs install process.  Debian
includes an empty http.conf file as part of the distribution because
external processes (e.g. apxs) expect it to be there.  Debian, however, puts
the core config information into apache2.conf, which loads httpd.conf and
all of the requested modules from mods-[enabled/available] separately.  Long
story short, if you just load httpd.conf, like apxs does, there are no
LoadModule statements to be found.  Try adding the following to httpd.conf:

LoadModule mod_xmlent /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_xmlent.so

This should be enough for apxs to complete it's job.
