And, of course, as soon as I hit "Send" I started thinking of ways in
which I should clarify and qualify what I'd written.  The first that
comes to mind is that, for the foreseeable future, we need to maintain
the ability to build and install from a cvs export.

With this in mind, I hastily drew a diagram of the conceptual overview
that sorta-kinda represents what I'm getting at with all of this.
Please let me know if, after reading the doc, this diagram helps (or
hurts) your understanding of, well, all of this... :)
