Responding to my own question:
The error message
> chopchop 2007-03-29 17:02:52 [WARN:25497:osrf_chat.c:554:] Client 
attempting to connect to invalid domain 127.0.0.1. Our domain is localhost 


was because the domain was given as 127.0.0.1 in ~/.srfsh.xml

Changing that to localhost makes it possible to start up srfsh ...
