I have seen that before, and there's a similar mechanism in Perl, but
AFAICT they will both have problems with replication support (Slony,
if not pgpool).  I'm more than willing to be proven wrong of course.

For the time being I'm going to focus on specing what needs to happen
as opposed to which tool to use.  Hopefully the appropriate tool will
be self-evident once we understand the problem more completely ... if
that makes sense.
