The escaped quotes ( \" ) are because the XML is passed inside a JSON
string literal, so the " marks must be escaped by adding the slash
before them. In other words, the <record ... </record> section is not
yet XML, just a string of text. Once the JSON that is carrying that
text is deserialized the escaping is removed, then the XML string can
be pulled out and deserialized as well. To simulate that by hand
just remove the \ before " and \ characters.
