Good question, Jane!  I'm interested to hear ideas of terms to replace "click", but I hope we can avoid "operate".  While that may be inclusive in a technical sense, I think it requires all users to think more like a machine, when obviously our goal is to make the machines (and instructions) serve the users.

Here's an interesting documentation-related discussion happening on another email list I subscribe to.  I know that we have a lot of "click on X" language in our docs.  Should we consider some other term that also includes tapping, hitting Enter, voice control, etc.?

Similar to “operate” being equivalent to a click/tap, what would be the recommended instruction for executing swipe for a voice over user on iPhone or iPad?
