[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Question for consortiums

In PINES, call numbers are not decided at the consortium level. While
the bibliographic record is considered to "belong" to PINES as a whole,
item or volume records "belong" to the individual library and they can
assign whatever call number works best in their location.

We do actually set cataloging policy at the consortium level. Adherence
to national cataloging standards is expected of all libraries (yes, we
do have cataloging standards. Most of the problems with our database are
because libraries did not prior to joining PINES). At this time, we
don't allow batchloading of records (which are sole source -- OCLC)
because of the number of duplicate records in the system that are
holdovers from individual databases and that did not merge during data
migration. We don't want to bring in more duplicates and want to
encourage libraries to clean up existing records.

Only specific, trained catalogers (called Cat1s) can download, edit and
merge bibliographic records. Others can edit volume/item records and add
items/volumes to existing bib records.

Loan periods and fines are agreed upon by the entire consortium. There
are three levels of max fines a library can opt for, but the daily fines
for specific items are the same.

The reshelving time period (the time in Evergreen where the status is
listed as "reshelving") is consortium wide but is really just the
default in the software, as far as I know. We don't dictate whether that
reflects reality -- it could be that they are reshelved before the
status is automatically reset to available or not, depending on the size
and workload at the individual library.

Those are just a few things. I'll try to get a more structured answer
for you when I can.

Subject: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Question for consortiums

You know who I'm talking to, SITKA, Pines.

Since you have been there, done that, do you have a list of the things
that had to be agreed on by all vs the things that can be configured at
a System or Branch level?

So far I have:

Consortium level:
grace period, fines calculated schedule, custom fields in OPAC display,
OPAC indexes, circ modifiers, billing types, notice generation schdl.,
patron profile groups, default call# from tag ...

Branch/system level:
reshelving time period, stat. categories, loan periods, fines ...

I could be wrong on some of the above things & I know I'm missing lots.

Any help greatly appreciated by this newb, karen
