You can edit the 008 directly, however, it is difficult to be positive
you editing the correct fixed field location. You can switch to a OCLC
type grid that is more useful/

 

In MARC edit - doubleclick on "fixed fields" to get an OCLC type grid
(I've added screen shots from here, let me know if they don't come
through.
