Update. I got the client on the vm logged in. While retrieving
data(retrieved modifier list, retrieved billing type list and retrieved
cnal object) it came up with a error. TypeError: this.controller is
unspecified. Could this be caused by insufficient memory on the vm host?
I'm not even close to the recommend 1.5 gig.

Thanks for the response. This is happening on the virtual machine. I've
tried restarting evergreen and restarting the virtual machine several
times. Sometimes it will login but then I get network errors and can't
get any further. I can't remember the network error right now(something
about jabber disconnect). If it happens again I'll write it down. Does
it matter what the network settings for the vm network adapter are? NAT?
Bridged? I'm using debian lenny as the vm host. I've been trying to get
a working evergreen install on and off again for a long time now. After
three attempts to follow the directions for a stand alone server, I
thought I'd try the vm. We've looked at koha and the others as a
replacement for our aging Winnebago installation. My goal is to get an
installation of evergreen up and running for the beginning of the school
year 09.

Hi Mike,
You might want to check that you have port 80 and also 443 
forwarded to the virtual machine if you're running the staff client 
somewhere else than on the virtual machine
