Hello Ephraim,
Any chance you are using Ubuntu 9.04? When I installed on 9.04 for testing a while back, I had to add the IndexData Ubuntu repo and upgrade from 3.0.34-2 to the latest version of Yaz before everything worked properly. With the version of Yaz included with Ubuntu 9.04, Net::Z3950::SimpleServer would not install/work properly (it would simply hang).
Good luck,
Dan W.
