WinCE devices generally use different CPU architectures than x86, and most
importantly, they're missing tons of APIs that "real" Windows programs
require. There currently isn't any good way (maybe over a Terminal Services
connection, but that would be pretty horrible) to run the full staff client
on a CE device. Most likely, anyone that tried to make one would be wasting
their effort because the devices are so limited. A cheap laptop like Dan
suggested would be a great way to go.
If the all in one device is really that compelling, you could go the CE
route, and use the tools available from MS to make your own little inventory
program. Then someone would feed it a list of barcodes for items that are
currently available (preferably in shelf order) beginning with the section
you are about to inventory, then as you scan items it can note that things
are either out of order or missing, then based on feedback from the staff
(i.e. it was over here, or it really is gone) the program could then give
you back a list of missing items. This would be a fine way to go if there
are programmers on staff, especially if they're already familiar with
Windows development, but don't take my best case scenario of how it could
work to mean that it would be easy to do. :)
We have an RFID system that includes a (WinCE) inventory device. The program
on it works similarly to what I've described, with a couple extra things
here or there. I hope that it works well, but neither we nor the nearby
library system that converted with us have tried it yet.
