Linux System Administrator

The BC Libraries Cooperative [1] is a non-profit, member-driven
corporate body providing shared services and economies of scale to
public, post-secondary, school and special libraries in the Province
of British Columbia.  The Cooperative is home to Sitka [2] - a group
of libraries using the award-winning open-source Evergreen software
[3] as its shared Integrated Library System (ILS).  Sitka is supported
by a dedicated team and funded in partnership with the Province of
British Columbia [4].

The BC Libraries Cooperative is looking to hire a full time Linux
System Administrator under a fixed-term contract (term negotiable)
that may lead to a regular employee position.  As a member of a
dedicated technical and support team, this position will be
responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the Cooperative's
technical infrastructure.   24x7x365 on-call availability is also
required, and is coordinated amongst the dedicated team.

Residency in Vancouver, British Columbia is required for start date.
Compensation is negotiable, depending on qualifications and
experience.

Skills/Responsibilities: (items marked with a * are required)
*	minimum of two years experience with Linux system administration
using an enterprise-level distribution, Ubuntu Server or Debian
preferred.
*	experience managing server hardware
*	experience managing data backups
*	experience writing documentation and communicating technical
information clearly and concisely
*	ability to administer two or more racks of servers (production and
non-production environments)
*	experience planning system policies, hardware upgrades and security policies
*	experience managing firewalls
- 	experience managing load balancers
- 	experience managing Apache
- 	familiarity with RDBMS (PostgreSQL preferred)
- 	Experience with Perl programming and Bash scripting
- 	experience working in or with library organizations would be
considered an asset
- 	able to troubleshoot network latency issues
- 	Bachelor of Computing Science, Engineering or Physics or
significant coursework towards same; an equivalent combination of
education and experience may be considered.

Competencies:
*	ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely
* 	ability to manage stress
* 	a sense of humour
* 	available for on-call server support (candidate must be local)
- 	ability to work in a distributed environment (team members do not
all work in one location)
