James,
I am in a similar situation, I work for a large music college in the
US, called Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Our
students definitely benefit from listening to different performances
of the same piece. Several years ago we were able to add song title
indexing with authority control to our current ILS by using a local
field (Bib tag 945) and a linked authority record. Now we would like
to index our song titles in our existing AV and musical score
collections in Evergreen. In addition, we would like to have our song
title auth records authority controlled.
I am not an expert in Evergreen nor do I have an MLS, so please all of
you that know so much more than me about Evergreen on this list please
correct me. I believe that it is relatively easy in Evergreen to set
up keyword indexing on a custom field. So if for example, your bib
records are using a repeatable local field to list individual song
titles, Evergreen can relatively easily index that data and allow you
to perform keyword searches on it.
One potential difference in my situation, is that we would like to
also have our linked song title auth records authority controlled, but
currently Evergreen for the most part only provides authority control
to the standard author, subject, and series auth records. We are now
considering contracting ESI to develop song title indexing with
authority control in Evergreen 2.0 to our specifications. In addition
we are considering contracting ESI to develop song title alphabetical
browse searching features within the Evergreen 2.0 OPAC, which is an
key goal since there is currently no support for any alphabetical
browse searching in the OAPC. Though I have confirmed from ESI’s Mike
Rylander that Evergreen does have “mechanisms for building A-Z
listings, but they are not integrated into the OPAC and are focused
instead on some specific staff workflows.”
Let me know if you want more information on our plans for indexing
song titles in Evergreen, our old set up, or if you just want some
ideas of what approach to take for indexing your song title data in
your collection.
Good luck,
Yamil
