What you want is MARC tag 521.  This is where you can put the lexile, age level, movie rating, etc.  It is very handy. Although you will have to do a little work to make it show up in the catalog.  Some libraries use a local genre heading (tag 65 with 2nd indicator 7) to specify something like "Young adult fiction. local" or "Gamer fiction. local"--I prefer the 521 if you are looking at reading level or maturity, although I suppose that last one is subjective.

Thanks for the replies. I had been confused about where 'volumes' fit
in and Deanna's explanation has made it much clearer.

The classification I am looking for is not the same as the call number
which, if I understand correctly, is a tag on a volume by which it can
be located in the shelf in a particular library - a way to 'call out'
the item. Rather I am looking more for metadata at the top ('bib')
level that can be used, for example, to determine if a book is
suitable to be recommended to someone based on age and maturity.
Therefore, books in very different categories or sections could have
the same rating but may have nothing else in common. This is a very
library-specific requirement so I would not be surprised if it is not
catered for in the MARC standard but I would like to know the correct
way to add and use custom metadata.
