Hi Mary,

Tim has it right. For the record, here are definitions for the summary method options, which will be included in the forthcoming Serials 2.4 documentation update:

Select a Summary method. This determines how the Holdings Summary will treat the Legacy Record Entry (i.e. MFHD record) in relation to the Serial Control holdings data.

* Add to record entry - Displays the MFHD holdings summary first, followed by the summary generated from the Serial Control received issues

* Use record entry only - Displays only the MFHD holdings summary

* Do not use record entry - Displays only the holdings summary generated from Serial Control received issues

* Merge with record entry - Merges the two holdings summaries into a single statement

About your first question, I will answer it in parts.

> What is the Legacy Record entry? How is it used?
The Legacy Record entry is the MFHD record, which is called "legacy" because it is the "old way" of managing serials (where the Serials module provides a new way without MFHD). One goal of the Serials module is to connect the old data with the new, so you do not need to migrate old data into a new format. The Summary Method lets you choose how the old and new data interact.

> When I click in it, I see a list of numbers. Are these from other subscriptions?
Yes, this is a known bug which lists all of the Legacy Record entries without limiting by subscription. This has been fixed in the new combined Serial Control interface (Actions for this record > Serial Control View, click Subscriptions tab, click on a Subscription, editor appears in the right pane). The combined interface also changes it from a list of numbers to a more helpful list of labels.

> Can we safely skip this field?
If you are not using MFHD data for a bib record, then you can skip the Legacy Record entry field. Also, in that scenario I think most of the Summary Method options would result in the same display (except "Use record entry only", which would just hide the generated summary statement, leaving you with no displayed summary). But the most sensible option would be "Do not use record entry", as you thought.

I hope that helps add some detail to the already helpful answers of Mr. Spindler.

Hi all,

We are now on Master/2.4 and I have some questions about some fields in the
distribution screen set-up.

1. What is the Legacy Record entry? How is it used? When I click in
it, I see a list of numbers. Are these from other subscriptions? Can we
safely skip this field?

2. The summary method field requires an entry. The choices are

Add to record entry

Merge with record entry

Use record entry only

Do not use record entry.

What are the implications of these choices? We are entering our magazine
data manually, so there are no 85x tags involved.

Thanks,

Mary
