Thanks, Dan, Jim, Sarah, and Jason for the feedback! All very good info.

I searched long and hard for something like this in Launchpad, but couldn't find anything so I created a new bug report. I added the comments from Dan, Jim, and Sarah to my comments on it. (Sorry, Jason - I didn't see this reply until after I submitted it! Too techie for me (yet) but it's good to know it's already possible on the back end)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1276874

Please add yourself to this bug if you would like it to be just as easy to undo location batch changes as it is to make them. Thanks!

-Holly

We (the tech. staff at a our consortium's central site) usually get asked to do these for the members. We keep track of the previous location for the copies in a custom table that we added to a custom
schema: mvlc.temp_copy_changes.

Very often, we do this in large batches too large for the staff client to handle. We recently moved over 28,000 copies for one of our members who was having some work done on their main branch building. We moved them all to Storage while the work was done, and then put them all back just yesterday.

Another way to get the old copy location for a copy would be to use that auditor.asset_copy_history table. We clear ours out every 6 months, so it is less useful for us.

I know you are specifically asking about solutions in the staff client, but there are some non-staff client solutions. If you'd like to see real, first class support for temporary copy locations, I'd suggest making a wishlist bug on Launchpad.
