I believe the behavior you're seeing is a variant of this bug (thanks
to Mike for pointing me to it):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1275074

This is fixed in what will be EG 2.5.3, but there's no reason not to
patch it on your system. :)

I'll see if we can make the bug report more generic.  It's not easy
finding things on Launchpad, sadly.
