Hi Geoff, Lise, folks,

Appreciate your thoughts and help on this--Looks like the virtual location is the way to go!

If I run into any updates as I get this going, I will post out to the list to share with others.

Thank you!

That's very helpful, Tony. We haven't looked into that feature so I appreciate your pointing out the documentation.

It looks like Evergreen treats this as a shelving location rather than an org unit so it wouldn't realize that the material wasn't in the building. Items wouldn't go "in transit" to the alternate location so it would be hard to trace them. If Library X and Local School Y are geographically very close, library staff would be able to deliver and retrieve materials daily, I suppose. Would you have a way to turn off the alternate function when school isn't in session?

I can't see why creating a separate org unit would be problem for the library, though. Of course, Local School Y would have to agree to use Evergreen in order to check materials in and out or you would have no way to know where an item was. They might not care for that but it would be nice to give patrons more choices, especially the kids.

Hi Lise, folks,

Thanks the note! Here’s a bit more background:

Let’s say you have a patron from Library X. When they place a hold, instead of picking up their hold at Library X, they wanted to pick it up at Local School Y that the library is affiliated with. In this case, the school is not really part of the library, just a place that holds will be shipped to. Are there any best practices for this that folks have used?

An additional org unit is probably the best method, but since it’s only going to be a location to ship the holds, not sure that is really applicable? (Maybe it is?) I thought about the “alternative hold pickup location” (See: http://docs.evergreen-ils.org/2.7/_alternate_hold_pick_up_location.html), and this would do at least initially, but if Library X ever wants to add additional hold pickup locations, this might not work(????).

Thanks again for your thoughts as you have a moment….

I'm not familiar with the concept of an "alternate" hold pickup location. Others probably already understand what you mean, but would you mind explaining?

Thanks,
Lise

Hello everyone,

Looking for the group’s wisdom and practical experience!

--------------------

In conjunction with a few of the libraries in our system, we’re working on a project to offer patrons an alternative hold pickup location for a particular patron group…starting with one location, but with future potential for possibly more. Does anyone have any “best practices” or tips and tricks for this they can share?

Things that I have found that come to mind are: additional org. units and the alternative hold pickup location option.

I’m not so sure however if either of these are helpful as the hold pickup locations that the library wants are not really org. units and the alternative hold pickup location works for an initial possibility—but what if there are multiples?

Any thoughts you can share (or tips, tricks, links, etc.) would be most appreciated! (Has there been a presentation on this I’ve missed maybe?)

Thank you so much!
