[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Ordering bibliographic & item records from vendors

Hi Glen,
We go through Baker & Taylor's Customized Library Service -- their
catalogers are issued (limited) logins to our Evergreen system and they
catalog directly in Evergreen according to our established cataloging
policies.
Since most of what B&T does for us is copy-cataloging, I do imagine that
they use Vandelay to load the MARC records in batch. They then add
volumes (call #s) and item records according to the practices we've
established with them. We receive the items completely shelf-ready &
they just need a check-in at circ to be on their way.
They do obviously charge us for this service, but because we're pretty
small we find that it's well worth it to us to free up the staff time.
They do a decent job and are great about issuing credits on the rare
occasion they make a processing error.
Note that we do not use Acquisitions, but my understanding is that this
CLS service can be done as part of an EDI/Acquisitions process.
Let me know if you have any questions!
