I won't be able to make today's meeting (working on docs, incidentally) but I wanted to report that TEP Board did discuss AI / LLM issues brought up at last meeting - there was no decision but here's the minutes from the relevant section:

  • Questions:

    • Does our docs licensing permit use in an AI/LLM setting? 

    • Does our docs licensing permit generating content with an AI/LLM?

    • Are there any specific guidelines that developers should keep in mind when writing or reviewing code for TEP that is generated with AI/LLM tools?

  • Dan Guarracino described OWWL’s current pilot of using an internal chatbot docs search tool, leveraging Orama: https://orama.com/ 

  • Summary of discussion:

    • Environmental concerns

    • Permitting creativity and experimentation

    • Need to understand details of what our licenses say about this

    • What our community concerns are vs. what are peer open source groups doing 

    • Potential risks to community assets & trademarks

    • Does AI/LLM use fulfill the share-alike portion of the CC 3.0 license?

    • Need for community conversation & probably a workgroup

  • Galen will organize a meeting during the Conference Hackfest to discuss this with the larger community.

  • Collectively, the board appreciates the heads up from OWWL and are interested to hear about the outcome of the experiment.
