[Eg-oversight-board] eg-oversight-board Digest, Vol 55, Issue 47

Hello,

I am submitting a request for a few changes to the proposed Evergreen Event Code of Conduct as submitted by Galen. This request is one of clarification only and I hope that you will consider the changes outlined below.

NC Cardinal, as a NC state government entity and as part of the conference event organizers, would like to request that any EOB statement not be ambiguous in terms of who is making the Event Code of Conduct Statement. We also request changing the words "Evergreen event Organizers" and "Evergreen Conference" to "the EOB and the Software Freedom Conservancy" or other wording that would clarify that this statement is from the EOB and/or SFC. For example point 3 of the statement declares that "The Evergreen Conference" will refund...." We feel that "The Evergreen Conference" wording might lend itself to an interpretation that we, the State Library of North Carolina and NC Cardinal, are providing refunds because of HB#2.

Thank you for considering the above request.

Tanya

BEGIN --
Per the Evergreen Event Code of Conduct https://evergreen-ils.org/code-of-conduct
Evergreen event organizers are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. It is now important to reemphasize that commitment.

In particular, the Evergreen Oversight Board is disappointed that the North Carolina General Assembly has chosen to pass legislation that nullifies city ordinances that protect LGBT individuals from discrimination, including one such ordinance passed by the Raleigh City Council. Since the 2016 Evergreen Conference is to be held in Raleigh, the Oversight Board is taking the following steps to protect conference attendees:

* We are working with the conference venue and hotels to ensure that their staff and organizations will not discriminate on the basis of gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion.
* We are informing the conference venue that had House Bill 2 been in effect during the conference site selection period last year, the Evergreen Project would not have chosen Raleigh.
* The Evergreen Conference will refund in full registrations from individuals who feel that they can no longer safely attend the conference.
END -

Chiming in as a random ex-board member, I applaud the common spirit of wanting to address this issue. I do think trying to do something associated with the conference is pretty late in the game for it. I think addressing it in a wider statement as Galen proposed showing the community's stance towards diversity is a better path to walk for now and we could potentially announce that those changes have been made at the conference. It would make a statement now but also lay ground work for this as a common understanding in the future.

I'm also going to ask a question that exposes my ignorance of the site selection process for the conference. Do we have anything that says we will not consider a site that falls under a jurisdiction with this kind of legislation in place?

+1 as well. Very nicely stated, thank you Galen.

and +1 to amending the Code of Conduct to "gender, gender identity and expression".
