[Evergreen-catalogers] General info on working with profiles

My questions are pretty basic but after reading bits and pieces of various threads and other people's listserv questions, I am a bit confused about profiles.  My questions are specifically about overlaying and merging existing records within an evergreen database.

Questions:


1.    I know that the 901c tag is used for matching when merging/overlaying records.  I thought the 901c was used within the programming code but it appears that the 901c must be explicitly included in every merge/overlay profile in order for the profiles to work correctly.  Is that right?


2.    The "preserve" tag is confusing to me.  Do you have to specify EVERY tag that you want to preserve in addition to what you want to add within a single profile?  I know that there is an "all" code that replaces a record completely but what if you want a "true" merge, i.e. new records being imported add to but never replace existing fields within a MARC record?  I thought the tags not specified in a profile would be left alone if the profile had "add" fields only.  i.e. for an "Add Subjects" profile, it would only add the additional 650 rows and NOTHING else (no other tag) is replaced when the profile specifies nothing in any of the other "preserve, remove, replace" columns. In testing, our existing profiles produce inconsistent results.  It looks like if tags are set to "preserve" with no other add/remove/replace definitions set, the preserved tags are "preserved" and kept upon import but all other tags are replaced?



Our consortium is currently experiencing issues where one library is completely replacing and/or partially replacing tags/subfields within MARC records from another library.  Based upon log files, I've narrowed the issue down to the library profiles.    I didn't create the existing profiles and want to make sure that I create new/edit the existing ones correctly.



We are on v2.1.1.
