[Evergreen-catalogers] Conference discussion: wish list for cataloging

Hi,

1.) I am also interested in a separate permission to create and edit brief records that does not allow staff to edit full records downloaded from OCLC. In our Innovative system we were able to do this. I hesitate to give all catalogers permission to edit records but may need to do so. We have 150 libraries in our consortium and I'm not sure how much time it would take for central site staff to create records for local materials. Currently they can use 19 different bib record templates covering every format for which they needed records.

2.) A few years ago when we first looked into migrating to Evergreen someone at a cataloging interest meeting mentioned being able to add local fields (590 or 69x) to records and being able to scope these so that the fields only showed when in that particular scope. I think this was done using subfield 9.

We have a few libraries that have always wanted to add subject headings for local authors or musicians or note fields if their copy of the book has been autographed by the author.

Recently we allowed a local author subject heading with geographic subdivisions. This worked fairly well although there was some discussion as what constituted a local author: birthplace, long residence, worked for local paper. In our network we have Dr. Seuss, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, and Thornton Burgess.

Being able to add a scoped note field would be very useful for libraries that have special collections too.

Subject: [Evergreen-catalogers] Conference discussion: wish list for cataloging

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has a list of the topics that were discussed as wishlist items at the Cataloging Workgroup at the 2012 conference? I'm sure we have people in this email group who were unable to attend, and would like to offer an opinion, or add ideas of their own to the list.

I'll start with the idea near and dear to my heart: a way to allow restricted access to editing the MARC record, based on permission by tag. In other words, being able to allow someone to edit tag 300 to add pagination to a CIP record, but not allow them to make changes to tag 245.

Related to that is the idea of record ownership so that if a library owned a particular record created for local purposes (something that our consortium would not be adding to OCLC), they could add or enter any tag on their record. An example for us would be a library that lends museum passes and would like them to show in the catalog. Right now, we have to create that record for them in Evergreen; we'd like to be able to turn that over to them without giving them the ability to edit the records we downloaded from OCLC.

My two cents,

Mary
