[Evergreen-catalogers] Hotkeys in the web client

We’re definitely behind there, currently on 2.12.2… main reason I haven’t looked into putting it in as a bug or anything like that yet. (With the web client still a bit wet behind the ears, have been fully expecting to see some refinements like that turn up and get fleshed out.) Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out. (First quick skim shows it looking more or less exactly like what I was hoping would get built. Nice.)

We’re scheduled to upgrade in a couple weeks, likely to 3.1.2. Was going to review the status of window titles then, to see if that’d be the way to move forward for our RFID config.

Meanwhile, even with an alternate method of “state detection” for the RFID program, we’d still greatly miss our hotkeys; losing the ability to fully customize them would be rough. See, we’ve managed to keep roughly the same set of function keys throughout all of our migrations (Evergreen, SirsiDynix, Taos), and have been using them since first automating on Inlex in… I think 1991.

27 year old habits may be hard to break. 😊

Hi Jeremy,
It is possible for the RFID program to scrape window titles instead, but the window titles in both the XUL and web client are not specific enough, at least not currently.
Could you tell me which version of Evergreen you're looking at? I'm wondering if you're looking at a system with code that was added during 3.02 that provides more specific page titles. https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1656036

We made a lot of improvements to the page titles with that bug, but if they still are not specific enough, could you let us know what would need to be done to make them more workable?

Thanks!

Kathy

There’s another issue with hotkeys in the web client, that I’ve been meaning to bring up.

Currently our RFID interface (Bibliotheca) relies on various hotkeys to switch modes… that’s how it knows whether to write security on or off, or just send data, and so on.

We have a standard toolbar that we use at all circulation workstations, with a set of hotkeys to match. The function keys (F1-F12) correspond directly to the buttons in the toolbar of the XUL client… staff do not click the buttons for most tasks, they use the function keys instead. The RFID reader is looking for those same function keys, and switches to the correct mode.

It is possible for the RFID program to scrape window titles instead, but the window titles in both the XUL and web client are not specific enough, at least not currently.

Two of the systems in our consortium will not be able to move to the web client until a resolution for this problem is found.

Janet brings up a good point about the hotkeys not being noted in menus. There's a bug filed about this here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1622358
I haven't heard any objections to displaying the hotkeys in menus (at least the hotkeys that work relatively consistently -- not sure it would be appropriate to include the F5 for item status). I think this is something that LBCC may be able to take on -- I'll plan to talk to one of my colleagues about this as a possible project tonight.

I see one major problem with the keys not working on those interfaces, particularly F5. That is the shortcut key for Item Status and one used frequently by both circ and cataloging staff. I think it will be frustrating if it goes to Item Status sometimes and other times just reloads the page.

I
also think it would be a good addition to have the shortcut keys added to the drop-down menus for File, Search, Circulation, and Cataloging. It's a helpful reminder that shortcut keys exist.

They work, but there is one problem that has not been resolved. If you are in an interface with an iframe, the hotkeys won't work. This includes the public catalog interfaces and any of the old Dojo interfaces that were ported over. Those Dojo interfaces will eventually be converted, which will fix the problem there. It would be nice to have a solution for the use of hotkeys while using the staff catalog at some point.

Hello,

I was under the impression that hot keys (F1, F2, etc) do not work anymore in the web client as they did in the staff client.

Am I wrong? If so, that would be a major relief to all my staff who rely on those keys to quicken circulation duties.

Hi,

Are there hotkeys in the web client comparable to the xul client such as ALT+a+v+v+Enter to go to the add volumes screen, or, ALT+a+h to go to holdings maintenance? I have one cataloger who prefers to use the mouse as little as possible.

I know the add volumes button and holdings view now require only one mouse click. Are there any keyboard shortcuts to open these without a mouse? I haven't found any so far.

Thanks,
Janet
