[Evergreen-catalogers] Vox books and Wonderbooks

I finally got a chance to see a Wonderbook last week. They look pretty
awesome but I understand the library staff where I visited should one to a
child and they were totally uninterested! So, we may go to all this trouble
and have the format crash and burn.

Unfortunately, neither OLAC nor DLC has any guidance for this format yet. I
figure that, given Murphy's Law, whatever we decide on to catalog these
will end up changing if OLAC issues a white paper as they did for playaways.

My thoughts for cataloging, after looking at records in OCLC and OLAC's
instructions for Playaways and RDA.

I think they need a special icon similar to the one we, and others, have
created for Playaways. PINES is : [image: Audio With Player] Audio With
Player for playaways. Or if we could do multiple icons: Book, sound
recording, electronic resource

They aren't a book accompanied by a sound recording according to DLC's
Books With Accompanying Materials (
https://www.loc.gov/aba/cyac/accompanying.htm) since the audio player is
part of the book (see Material that is not recorded in the 300 field).

I suggest: Type: a and Form: q This is similar to playaways which are Type:
i and Form: q

The 006 (which causes so much trouble with icons) : 006 m bq h
(with audience specific to the manifestation)

The 007s:

007         cs nza|auuuu||

007 sz zunznnnzned
Physical description example:

300  1 audio-enabled book (170 pages) ; ǂb black and white illustrations ;
ǂc 20 cm

And then the 33x and 34x fields:

336 spoken word ǂb spw ǂ2 rdacontent

336 still image ǂb sti ǂ2 rdacontent

336 text ǂb txt ǂ2 rdacontent

337 audio ǂb s ǂ2 rdamedia

337 unmediated ǂb n ǂ2 rdamedia

338 other ǂb sz ǂ2 rdacarrier

338 volume ǂb nc ǂ2 rdacarrier

344 digital ǂb non-volatile flash memory ǂ2 rda

347 audio file ǂb MP3 ǂ2 rda

Notes on some of the records in OCLC help define the items, and do seem to
me to be useful:

500 Audiobook originally released by [publisher].

500 Issued as a Wonderbook, a pre-loaded audiobook player permanently
attached to a hardcover book.

500 Powered by a rechargeable battery ; USB charger required for
recharging.

500 Audiobook player has 2 modes. Read-Along mode narrates the story.
Learning mode asks questions related to the story.
