[Evergreen-catalogers] Format "Buttons" for Serials and Magazines

Hi Clare,
This question caught my eye immediately since it involved serials, and not a lot of libraries seem interested in serials. I can’t answer where the buttons are coming from a sys admin or programmer point of view, but I might have a couple of ideas as a cataloger and serials coordinator. I tried looking at your catalog, but it doesn’t allow me as a “patron” to see the MARC view like our catalog does, so I can’t be sure.

The first thing I can think of is that I know Evergreen is very particular about what 856 indicators it will accept to display the URL. Even though 856 4/ is not incorrect in cataloging, and worked fine in our old system, our Evergreen system wasn’t displaying any of those URLs. I think our Sys Admin changed ours to 856 41 to get them to show up.

The second thing I can think of is that years ago when I was just comfortable enough with cataloging serials to stop looking at my notes for every single field on every single record, I apparently missed the fact that while almost every other field I was dealing with began with $a, which was implied in Connexion, the 856 was $u, which had to be typed in. Apparently I did it that way for a few months before the clerk who input our changes into Connexion (back then we cataloged on paper printouts, and the clerk input our changes into our one OCLC terminal for us) said she noticed I had stopped putting the $u, but she assumed I knew what I was doing… None of those records had visible/usable URLs in the system we were using at the time, and I had to go back and find all those records and fix them.

You said that you compared the fields, but I swear I didn’t notice that 2nd one for months, because it was so easy to overlook. Hopefully someone will know what’s causing it, but those things won’t hurt to know 😊

I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue. In the above screenshot there are "buttons" for Serials and Magazines and eMagazine (which I added with an 856 tag. In the below screenshot I added the same 856 tag and no "button" appeared. Where does Evergreen get the information to add the "buttons" in the top Screenshot? I have compared the Leaders and tags in both records and can't figure it out
