My update is that I finally got some connection issues sorted out with
Chris for both the live web server and the test/staging area. We now have
proper backups and I've updated WordPress and all its themes and plugins.

For my next trick, I will fix the configuration of the test site so its
login page doesn't redirect to the live one, and then we can start building
new things on the test server.
