Yes, I had this same thought exactly when I was thinking about the value of a "library" icon vs. generic. I think you're right - various icon types are outside of the scope of the issue Ben Shum brought up specifically, and we can talk about it in the context of features on the new website. And, BTW, here is a comprehensive set of map markers: http://mapicons.nicolasmollet.com/ with a compatible license.
