I am concerned to see a mention of bootstrap.conf in your email (though you also have the correct command below it?).  This file is no longer used in the 1.2 branch.  Please make sure you are following the 1.2 instruction updates for Ubuntu seen here:  http://www.open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=installing_evergreen_1.2.x_on_ubuntu_7.04

If you already were working with that page, it is time to start looking through the logs in /openils/var/log/.  There are also some tips (at least one related to your problem) on this page: http://www.open-ils.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=troubleshooting:problems_starting_evergreen

Feel free to zip up and post your logs if you want more direct help with this.  You may want to trim them down first, as sometimes an error state can fill them up pretty quickly with the same message again and again.
