One other thought (thanks to Mike for the suggestion) - can you run the
"SHOW SERVER_ENCODING;" command in psql to ensure that your database is set
up with UTF8 as the encoding?
For example:
psql -U postgres evergreen
# SHOW SERVER_ENCODING;
server_encoding
-----------------
UTF8
(1 row)
