[OPEN-ILS-DEV] staff client searches hang

There are some kinds of searches that do hang and/or time out. MARC
expert searches do so more than not. Currently, you can re-execute the
search and get the result set. "Retrieve records by TCN" searches from
the cataloging tab tend to take longer than TCN searches from the quick
search area. ISBN searches in the advanced search section (rather then
the quick search) can take longer. Other odd searches also hang, as
Frances notes. They are usually keyword searches; the more specific
author or title searches tend not to hang. I hesitate to give my
memories of the explanation Mike gave me; it has been too long for me to
get all the details correct. However, my understanding is that there are
some very nice fixes that have been made that will lessen and even
eliminate these kinds of problems. They are slated for one of the
upcoming releases.

If the search times out (returns zero results when you know there should
be results), re-execute the search and you should have records returned.

We have done that vacuumdb and analyze.  We for sure did find that we
couldn't search after doing our big loads until that was done.

We think, having done that, that this is an additional problem.  It does
not seem to necessarily be related to the size of the result set.

It's weird because on our big db, some searches seem to hang and others
complete quickly.  We have done the vacuumdb and analyze, though, so we
don't think that's it.

This sounds very similar to a problem I asked about a few weeks ago
under the title "Postgres Speed Issues."  The query seems to hang in the
browser (or staff client) because it times out on the client side (maybe
at 60 seconds or so?).  If you actually run the searches in the command
line client, they do finish, but they can take a REALLY long time.  The
time seems directly related to the size of the result set, not any
particular nature of the query itself.

It turns out that the load process as it stands creates a lot of extra
"baggage" in the database.  You can read my last post in that thread and
Mike R.'s response for a workaround with future loads, but the simplest
answer at this point is that you may need to vacuum the database:

    $ vacuumdb -U postgres --all --full --analyze

You may want to substitute '-U evergreen' if that is the name of your
'evergreen' database owner-user.

This worked for me to clear up these really long queries.

A catalog search, can be from Home, a keyword search, or can be from
Advanced a keyword search.

Some searches work, some seem to hang and not return results.

What kind of search are you doing? A patron search?  Or a catalog
search? If it is a catalog search, is it a MARC expert search?

Hi all,

We are having a problem with searches in our staff client intermittently
hanging. The hung searches correlate with the following error in the
open-ils.search_unix.log.

Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at
/opt/openils/lib/perl5/OpenILS/Application/Search/Biblio.pm line 520

Is any one familiar with this problem? I saw an old open-ils-dev message
that suggests it may be related to some missing circulation modifiers in
openils.xml. Can anyone elaborate? We are running Evergreen 1.2.2.0
