I've been working on improving that very page. Attached is my re-worked page as an example. (All of the interesting stuff is in the javascript.) If you load this onto a test server you'll get plenty of dead image links, but everything should still work.  

If you want to add a new feature, you can just load up C:\Program Files\Evergreen Staff Client\build\chrome\content\main\menu.js and see how that feature is implemented in the client menu code. Most of them are very simple, but things like changing the current user are much more involved. (I had toyed with putting it on this page, but haven't taken the time to fight with it.)
