Just a guess: you may have installed Postgres 8.3 instead of
8.2. In that case you would have a directory
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3.
Evergreen isn't ready for PG 8.3 yet. You may need to compile
Postgres from source in order to get 8.2.
