As a last stab, I'll let you know that there is an experimental Debian repository for Evergreen here:
http://archive.georgialibraries.org/
If you start with a fresh installation of Debian squeeze and follow the instructions on the site, you should end up with a working Evergreen server.
As I say, it's experimental, and not well-tested, but if you'd like to give it a go, please do!
