Given that the majority of Evergreen committers and developers do successfully use exactly that -- vim or emacs -- I would suggest that new Evergreen developers take that statement with a grain of salt.

This is not to say that the particular editor matters -- it does not, and one should use whatever one is comfortable with.  I don't dispute that an IDE can be very useful -- I certainly wouldn't care to write much Java without one.  Nor am I suggesting that folks not do the legwork to get hooks in place for remote debugging of OpenSRF Perl code -- some cursory Googling suggests to me that Enbugger [1] is worth looking at.

But ultimately, unless you're offering to go all the way now and starting putting such hooks in place so that you can use the remote debugging tools provided by your favorite IDE, I would suggest that new developers are better served by diving into the code -- even if the development tools aren't the best or preferred -- to get some experience with the code itself.
