Per the developer update yesterday at the Evergreen conference, we would
really like to have a translation manager as part of the developer team.
If you have internationalization expertise, and have an interest in
improving the quality of Evergreen's support for internationalization
and coordinating the efforts of the translators, we would like to talk
to you!
Here's a little background:
Translation has largely been on a best-effort basis since the Evergreen
1.0 release. It has largely focused on the public interface since 1.0,
with significant chunks of staff interface left behind over time.
We chose Launchpad as the lowest barrier to entry for casual
translators, but this poses a barrier for more professional translators.
In short: tools, testing, coordination... all have been on a best-effort
basis.
And we have a _good_ problem: there are a number of languages with
members of the community that complain when things break: Canadian
French, Armenian, Czech, Georgian, Finnish... and we want to keep this
list growing!
To improve the quality of Evergreen's support for internationalization,
we believe that we need a focal point for translations on the
development team. While the role (or roles) are not tightly defined,
some of the potential roles and responsibilities that person (or
persons) could take on include:
* Someone willing to work as part of the dev team;
* Partially to beat developers over the head until we learn;
* Partially to improve or replace translation tools and processes;
* Partially to coordinate translators translation teams;
* And it will not be a thankless job! Thank you / miigwetch / merci will
roll in (and doubtless many other languages)
If you're interested, respond! We will help you help us!
