Just to followup on what Lebbeous said about the APIs, there exist also
several JavaScript libraries that ship with OpenSRF and Evergreen that
can be used to make these API calls. Dan Scott has even shared some
basic tutorials of using the JavaScript libraries:

The tutorial also includes Perl examples.

I've never tried, but I'm fairly certain that these JavaScript examples
could be made to work from a browser extension.
