[OPEN-ILS-DOCUMENTATION] Chapter 97. Holds Management

Hi all,

I wanted to bring to your attention something that is missing from the holds management documentation that I think could use a mention with some emphasis.

We had a question from one of our library systems in the NC Cardinal consortium regarding the functionality of Clear Hold Shelf under the Circulation dropdown menu (see attachments). The option to select pickup branch, etc (circled in clear hold shelf 2) is greyed out and not usable. If staff go into the same menu through Browse Hold Shelf (instead of Clear Hold Shelf) from the dropdown menu (see Clear hold shelf 1) then those options are not greyed out. This seems like a usability issue or a bug.

Equinox sent us an explanation that stated that Clear Holds Shelf is an action, while Browse Holds Shelf is a view of the virtual holds shelf.

According to Equinox:

Clicking "Clear these Holds" on the Browse Holds Shelf screen or doing Circulation->Clear Holds Shelf will perform the same action - cancel expired holds and then display a list of cancelled and wrong shelf holds for the pickup library.

However, the Clear Holds Shelf automatically sets the pickup library to the location registered in the staff client for that workstation and clears the holds in one click, whereas Browse Holds Shelf allows you to specify the location and review the clearable holds - at which point you may decide to clear them or not.

However, that documentation does not make any mention that clicking on "Clear Hold Shelf" in the Circulation dropdown menu is actually an action trigger, as Equinox is reporting. I am not a fan of that functionality, since there is no warning to staff that an action is about to be taken that cannot be undone. Using a button has a clear implication that one is taking action, while choosing a menu item with no popup or other notification is not. If this is the intended functionality, I think it would be very helpful if the documentation made that clear.
