[OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Feature request: importing titles from FollettLibrary applications

Hello, List.

Let me start by thanking Kevin... I just joined last night, have not
'lurked' for two months, but have an immediate followup question and am
using his post as an excuse to jump right in...

I have searched the site and a few of the archives, and even started to
read the code for oils-dataloader, but can find little about data
loading. I would like to replace my existing backup OPAC
(http://library.wlu.ca/searchme) with open-ils. For now, just for fun...
In the long run, perhaps to replace our Voyager OPAC.

Several of you have been kind enough to help Rene Paquin get the code
*almost* running... I'd like to be prepared to put data in once he gets
all the way there.

Thanks for any pointers.

ps... First post, so I'll offer a brief bio... I've been doing library
systems stuff since the early geac days.. Once upon a time was part of
the three person team that wrote a CD-ROM/PC based opac
(http://epress.lib.uh.edu/pr/v1/n3/loney.1n3). Am now manager for our
consortial voyager management team. Wrote the aforementioned OPAC backup
after a couple of egregious upgrade problems.

Has this been moved over to OPEN-ILS-DEV?
I'm interested in the migration issue, but
I cancelled my DEV "subscription" since it
was over my head most of the time.

Migration in general, not just FolletLibrary...

I'll get back on DEV if this topic is being discussed
there....

Thanks.

Kevin

Hi Paul, to pursue this we would likely need a lot of help from you.
You'll have to determine how encumbered your organization is
contractually with Follett, whether you have a right to use or talk
about their export tools, and whether you even own your data. I
wouldn't expect a lot of barriers here, but you never know.

Just from googling, it does look like they have a way to export MARC21
for bibliographic data and can include holding information in a MARC
format. This is good. Patron data is a bit murkier. There really
isn't a library standard for that (as far as I know), but as long as
any export is consistent and structured, we can map it to Evergreen.

If anyone else has an interest in this and wants to jump in, or wants
to share their own import stories, please do so! We might also want
to move this thread over to OPEN-ILS-DEV.

Thanks!
