Karen:

As a thought, is this the only thing you're going to have that server
doing and have you talked to whoever is going to maintain the server for
you?

Personally, I'm a really big fan of two servers running in a
load-sharing parallel, that way if there's a failure on one the other
can take up the slack without so much as a hiccup in end-user's
accessability (although it will, of course, likely be slower unless you
have a lot more processor than nominal).

Then they are considerations such as your network infrastructure and
other assets -- there isn't much sense in buying a superfast system if
the network can't utilize it, unless you're looking to the future.

Good luck; these questions should help you along the way.

Christopher

In Evergreen, all records are visible in the staff version of the
catalog, regardless of how their visibility is calculated for the
public version of the catalog. It's also worth noting, that aside
form that, the catalogs are basically the same, though the staff
client has hooks into the embedded PAC for such things as MARC
editing, etc.

The infrastructure is there for record level notes (but there's no
interface for it currently), but I assume you could also put notes in
the MARC to clarify why a record is sitting around without any
attached items. So Evergreen can handle this as is currently.

Thanks Carol,

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone here can offer some advice on server specs. I
work for a small public library, and we're trying to set up a test
server ourselves that could later become the actual production server
for Open-ILS. We don't want to sink unnecessary money into the server,
but we also don't want it to be ridiculously slow and unable to handle
the load.

We have a little over 50,000 unique titles, with duplicates bringing us
to around 60,000 items. We have between 10 and 11 thousand patrons,
from a population of 19,000. We have 3 branches (one main and two
satellite).

Any suggestions on number of servers, memory, hard drive space, and
whatever other specs matter would be appreciated. If the answer is
different for minimum or recommended, I'd like to hear both numbers and
compare.

Thank you,
Karen Collier
