Canadian tax structures and academia can be a bad combination. Our Finance
Department requires tracking of the Federal VAT (called GST - Goods and
Services Tax), which is typically self assessed on either each line item
or an entire invoice when applied, and is extracted and reported in the
interface. Some Finance Departments handle all of this, but the carrot for
doing the tracking is sometimes related to where any rebates from the
Federal Government go, i.e., either to Finance or back to the library.
It's quite common in Canada to pay taxes and deal with rebates, often a
pain for both buyers and sellers but unavoidable. One problem that has
come up here is that the JD Edwards system, which issues the checks for
the campus, sometimes introduces rounding inconsistencies (GST
non-rebateable-division-rates are often set to 4 decimal places, e.g.
"1.0198", and this is enough to throw things slightly off). A widget for a
tax calculator would be really cool.
