Canadian tax structures and academia can be a bad combination. Our Finance 
Department requires tracking of the Federal VAT (called GST - Goods and 
Services Tax), which is typically self assessed on either each line item 
or an entire invoice when applied, and is extracted and reported in the 
interface. Some Finance Departments handle all of this, but the carrot for 
doing the tracking is sometimes related to where any rebates from the 
Federal Government go, i.e., either to Finance or back to the library. 
It's quite common in Canada to pay taxes and deal with rebates, often a 
pain for both buyers and sellers but unavoidable. One problem that has 
come up here is that the JD Edwards system, which issues the checks for 
the campus, sometimes introduces rounding inconsistencies (GST 
non-rebateable-division-rates are often set to 4 decimal places, e.g. 
"1.0198", and this is enough to throw things slightly off). A widget for a 
tax calculator would be really cool.
