Joel,
The Evergreen community via the Dev forum and Documentation Interest
Group along with a log of help from our friends
in Canada and Atlanta are making huge strides forward in easing your
Windows to Linux server pain. This really is a true
heterogeneous solution which can match all it's alternatives.
We, Lyrasis, are currently working with Evergreen 1.4.0.6 running on
an Ubuntu 8.10 (linux) server. This arrangement appears to be quite
stable.
The Staff clients, which connect to Evergreen's server/database on the
Ubuntu server, are actually running on our Windows XP machines and
allow Staff to do everything from Cataloging, shelving etc. and work
with patrons via the Window XP machines at branches.
Patrons searching the catalog are using Internet Explorer and Firefox
browsers predominantly as OPAC tool on Windows XP machines.
So, with the exception of one machine, the actual evergreen server,
which installs from a single Ubuntu CD and step-by-step (almost
*cough*) instructions from open-ils.org,
your daily Evergreen life would be conducted on your Windows XP
machines.
